weight a minute v2...

Beyonce is fat? WTF?
I got into a small debate with someone a few months back about Beyoncé being fat or not.

Really, my conversations are not that shallow: At the time I was in the "data collection" phase in research on Black women & exercise (my general research area is obesity). Within this discussion, size came up, of course. In the midst of me trying to explain the difference between "thick" & "fat", I said an ideal example of what is considered "thick" is a shape like Beyonce's, but even then she may fall on the "skinny-with-curves" side depending on what movie role she's doing at the time. I was explaining this to four mid-40ish women, 3 which were White and hadn't really known what she looked like. Beyoncé’s shape seemed like an ideal example given her popularity, but clearly I was mistaken. The Black woman was very familiar with > Beyoncé and adamantly rejected my classification of Beyonce as thick. She actually proclaimed that she was...FAT! WTF! That was the first thing that popped into my mind. I had to consciously censor myself. I was in a professional environment so I went on to calmly disagree letting them know that she is a singer and dancer that stays on tour, was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and probably wears clothes sizes ranging between a 2-6. Okay maybe an 8 pants, but that may be due to hips, which last time I checked was not a very bad thing. All this to say that, I don't think society has advanced to the level of featuring a "fat" woman in these avenues without branding her as "full-figured". In hindsight I should have mentioned that her latest videos featured her clad in a freaking leotard & high heels. Admittedly, that does not mean she couldn't be considered "fat", but all the parodies that have been done on the video have not come close to implying that she is in any way (shape or form) fat. And you know those folks can be pretty ruthless. Back to the story: the woman kept on saying that she was fat and was bigger than all those taking part in the conversation. I was puzzled because she included herself and this woman is definitely obese by BMI’s standards- very apparently larger than Beyoncé . I could not believe what my ears were hearing. After a short back and forth and my staunch refusals to believe her statements, she mentioned that she was not a Beyoncé fan…AHA, so the real opinion comes out. It was really never about her weight, she was being a hater. That was the end of that conversation, this was not a real debate.

I wouldn’t necessarily classify myself as a Beyoncé fan (though I like many of her songs and respect her hustle), but come on, give credit where it’s due. She has a good voice is a good dancer and has a nice shape. I visited a couple of websites (I refuse to name them), and saw that there are more people (mostly women) out there with this same sentiment of Beyoncé being fat. I had no idea how far the hateration for Beyoncé goes. This is the type of stuff that leads me to do the psychological work that I do. It fascinates me (and infuriates at times) how someone's perception of someone else's character can influence how they perceive their physical features. I could see the attractiveness judgment, but it's application to weight would seem like a more difficult task. This sentiment seems to be contrary to what a lot of research has espoused about Black women's acceptance of a larger frame.

For those that think she is fat, what does normal weight (for a Black woman specifically- if you think there is a difference between ideal White & Black figures) look like? I'm not trying to sway people to agree or sympathize with me, but I am curious to see if this is a sentiment that is widely shared. If anyone has more insight than my simple explanation of old fashioned hatin', please enlighten me.

I think for Black women the average size would be somewhere between a 10 and 14...I would agree that we are larger framed generally because of hips, butt, and thighs (the lower half). however, in general, I think Beyonce would be classified as "fat" to some people because she is curvier than most women in Hollywood, even when she is at a lower weight. I recently came across a blog (http://curvycouture.tumblr.com/) and I realized that fat in Hollywood and fashion is normal to most other people and those who idealize celebrities might have a skewed perception of what is fat and what is healthy and/or thick.

The pics you used are OLD & AIR BRUSHED; However, Bey is not "fat". She is the average size of a woman according to her height, build-up & cultural influence. Those are all factors.

Depending in what standards you go by, she could be "fat".

Bottom line, she is beautiful whether others want to acknowledge it or not. And, I am not even a Stan. Actually, I prefer someone else singing and entertaining me than Bey.

My male relative claims she's fat and he's not a 'hater.' I don't know what size she is right now, but anyway, I'd say the alst time I saw a vid of hers, she looked 'thick' rather than fat.

@ au naturale- thanks for the input. i am aware how the entertainment industry has placed an insane view on one's size (and how that's influenced others), but it threw me off was when she compared beyonce's size to her own. that was what puzzled me. if she would have said it to the tune of society or industry saying she's fat, i would have understood and agreed. but she didn't and i am puzzled. thanks for sharing the blog link and giving an astute perspective!

@ anon- old pics: what, 1-2 years? i don't think her size has changed that much. airbrushed: maybe the 2nd but i consulted a photoshop expert and he determined that the 1st is not likely.

yes, i agree it depends on what standard you use, but in few standards do either pic qualifies as that of a fat woman. fit or thick, maybe, but i think fat is pushing it.

what's troubling me is that i was not saying she was necessarily skinny but thick rather than fat.

thandi- was your cuz comparing fat vs thick? I'm curious as to what he considers avg, thick, fat.

Thanks all for giving me lots to think about. I may have to do another post body size.

It is very interesting how we view acceptable body size through blind historical eyes, with botched perception, and through the eyes of an industry that airbrushes EVERYTHING! And we rarely look at ourselves in the mirror before we judge and get real honest.

As far as popular American aesthetic (which is disgusting), the skinny chick thing came out with the model Twiggy, who was almost emaciated. Before that, Marilyn Monroe who was a size 14 was oogled by men.

Mind you BLACK women were left out of any dialogue or celebration about what was beautiful because Hollywood promoted Hattie McDaniel who complained because producers and directors wanted her to EAT more so she could look plumper!

It is very frustrating when we create these unrealistic and unhealthy images of fatness in a scewed world that turns around and IMITATES US in various ways of beauty.

Angelina Jolie can have big lips, Shakira can have hips, Bo Derek can have braids and big breasts, J Lo can have a big butt; however, in no way there they are FAT.

Okay one more thing. Black women come is Various sizes! The whole concept of an average to me, is BS.

Cuz all of y'all got a family member with the tiniest breasts but hips and ass fo' days, or one with boobs and no booty.

alright, i'm finished for the day. great blog Ayankha

Even on her heaviest days I wouldn't consider her fat....she's just thick...

Sadly, our society is so used to seeing stick thin women on tv and in magazines.

Everytime I see the plus sized woman chosen on Americas Next Top Model I cringe because she is still thinner than the average woman.

She is not fat, but she IS heavily liposuctioned. There is no way someone can have big arms, fat on their back, chubby thighs, and no fat on their abdominal area. It doesn't make sense for a person's waist to be size 2/4 and everything else to be size 10/12. When you lose weight naturally, your whole body is affected, not just one area. There have been lots of online posts exposing her liposuction habits and loose stomach skin as a result. Also if you note, she has worn mostly leotards for the past year, which hides her stomach.
