"This season on The Tyra Show we're taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they've got and be proud! For the Season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that - no fake hair, I'm rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on September 8, 2009, which we're declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!"
I've seen this story 3 times today and each time I've had had a variety of emotions to it. Let me attempt to explain my tug-of-emotion:
YAY to encouraging women to "work what they've got". Self-esteem is gravely important in a young woman's life all around. I love that this message is on TV.

CONFUSION in her rocking her "real" hair (and inviting others to "go natural"). Will she be sans perm? Not the untra-neat cornrows, I'm talking about a showcase of the original "snap-back". Don't forget her sporting those very cornrows on the Good Hair, Bad Hair TBS episode. Maybe she's been wearing a wig to grow out her perm?!?! But not be too disappointed I will say "real" and "natural" will take on a very broad meaning.
WOAH to actually declaring a national holiday to real hair. Is this a real attempt to encourage women's self-esteem or to make natural hair the next half-shaven head fad? It puts me in the mind of MLK holiday celebrating MLK's legacy of promoting tolerance and peace VERSUS being grateful to have a day off of school/work. I guess either way is okay, provided that the message of self-acceptance and self-love is not lost.
So I guess her ads did the trick, I will set my VCR that day to see what happens.
BTW- I hope in addition to the new season that calls for shorter women (under 5'7") there will be a model that is allowed to keep her nappy crown or better yet with some type of loc. That would be so dope! There is definitely no shortage, just take a look at that I love my locks mag!

Looking forward to a review.
Can I be honest? Tyra, I appreciate her hustle. But, she is no pioneer in any natural hair movement or revolution. I am not trying to be mean. I'm just saying.
*rolling eyes*
All imma say is that if she rolls out on stage on sept 8 showing here 'real' PERMED hair, thre's gonna be a backlash all over the blogosphere...
Hmmm. Afrobella just posted an article that's eerily similar to yours...
